BTW At Work
The Coaching and Philanthropy Project
BTW is working in partnership with Grantmakers for Effective Organizations and Leadership that Works to examine how and to what extent "coaching" is being used in the nonprofit sector as a leadership development tool. Coaching has proven to be an excellent tool for moving individuals and organizations toward greater effectiveness within the private sector, and holds promise for enhancing the organizational capacity of nonprofits as well.

BTW is conducting quantitative and qualitative research on the current and potential interest in and use of coaching within the nonprofit sector from the perspective of both the nonprofit and philanthropic communities. The findings from this research will form the basis of discussions among a Design Team that will generate an Action Plan for advancing coaching as a leadership strategy in the nonprofit sector. BTW will facilitate the Design Team that will include representatives from the coaching profession, philanthropy and nonprofit organizations.

The Low Income Investment Fund's ABCD Initiative
The ABCD Initiative, a project of the Low Income Investment Fund, is designed to facilitate and accelerate the development of new child care spaces for California's children. ABCD employs a combination of grants, loans, technical assistance, training and policy advocacy to achieve its intention of generating 15,000 new child care spaces in California by the year 2010. In addition to specific financial and technical resources, ABCD is supporting the creation and cultivation of community-based collaboratives in ten communities across the state. In its totality, ABCD is dedicated to building a comprehensive and sustainable source of financing and support for child care facility development in California.

As part of the ABCD's commitment to effective and reflective practice, the Initiative engaged BTW informing change to facilitate a three-month planning process that included project staff, funders and local partners to articulate ABCD's Theory of Change. The group defined the problem ABCD was setting out to solve, the strategies and tactics ABCD is using to address the problem and benchmarks for measuring progress. The results of this effort will guide both program implementation and serve as a roadmap for a longer-term evaluation.
