Ideas for Change

What's New at BTW - Summer 2004

Evaluation, Reflection, & Learning
BTW does evaluation work in a way that applies information to inform change. We bring information to bear on planning, and we bring planning and reflection to bear on the collection and application of information. We specialize in working with organizations that desire to improve practice through the systematic and consistent collection and application of information.

Circular Nature of Formative Evaluation

Circular Nature of Formative Evaluation

We have been retained on two new projects that use unique techniques in applying this principle.

Marguerite Casey Foundation Learning Cluster. BTW is serving as the facilitators and evaluators for this relatively new foundation interested in creating a movement of low-income families through working with organizations that support this population. BTW will work with a cluster of eight organizations over a period of eighteen months in a process of both facilitating their connections, reflections, and learning, as well as evaluating how the work of these organizations connects to the larger vision of the Foundation.
Walter & Elise Haas Fund. BTW will be working with the Walter & Elise Haas Fund to help articulate theories of change for all four of the Fund's program areas and to ensure that their grantmaking goals are consistent with the Fund's newly adopted mission "to create connection to and responsibility for community." BTW will then develop an evaluation framework and measures for the Fund to assess its own progress and then will help to facilitate the reflection and learning process within the Fund.

Building Organizational Values
BTW is a leader in helping organizations define and live their organizational values. We believe that values are the bedrock of an organization's mission, vision, and activities.

Tides Center. BTW is facilitating a values and purpose clarification process for the Tides Center's Executive Director and Management Team. This process coincides with and complements the Center's large-scale business strategy project, led by Booz Allen Hamilton, which includes a comprehensive review of new market opportunities for the Center's provision of fiscal sponsorship and related services.

The Schwab Foundation's Building Effective Substance Abuse Treatment Initiative (BEST). As the facilitator for the BEST Initiative Learning Community, BTW is working with twelve substance abuse organizations on their organizational effectiveness, including how to live their values, especially in challenging times.

BTW in the Press
Recently BTW has been featured in two important publications.

The NonProfit Times. In this article, Fay Twersky, Principal of BTW, is featured as part of The NonProfit Times' Executive Session for her perspective on nonprofits facing financial and accountability challenges.

Funding Effectiveness: Lessons in Building Nonprofit Capacity. BTW informing change is featured in this new book through our evaluation work on two projects: the Organizational Capacity and Grants Initiative (OCGI) and our ongoing performance measurement work with REDF (formerly The Roberts Enterprise Development Fund).
